About The Position

Community Health Action of Staten Island (CHASI) drives dramatic improvements in the health of New Yorkers by feeding people who are hungry, healing families broken apart by violence, and bridging the gaps between people and the compassionate health care they deserve. CHASI provides outreach, education, prevention, and direct support services for populations most affected by health disparities – people with low or no income, low-income people with chronic illnesses, people with criminal justice involvement, people who use drugs, domestic violence survivors, people of color, and the LGBTQ community. POSITION SUMMARY: The Outreach and Engagement Specialist is responsible for building relationships within the community to connect individuals with recovery support and related services. This role conducts active outreach through community partnerships, presentations, and events to increase awareness of available programs and resources. Using strong communication skills and lived experience when appropriate, the specialist will engage individuals, reconnect participants who have been lost to contact, and encourage continued participation in recovery-focused services.

Requirements

  • Must hold a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) or Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) credential, or be eligible and willing to obtain one.
  • Experience with community outreach, public speaking, or facilitating presentations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships and effectively engage individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of recovery principles and familiarity with community-based resources
  • Ability to work independently in the community and collaboratively with a team
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Lived experience in recovery with knowledge of multiple pathways of recovery, including abstinence-based recovery, medication-assisted treatment, and harm reduction.
  • Experience providing peer mentorship, recovery support, or advocacy services.
  • Ability to engage and support diverse, low-threshold populations, including individuals experiencing substance use, housing instability, or other barriers to care.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including comfort with public speaking, outreach, and participant engagement.
  • Ability to assist with administrative tasks, including data entry, tracking, and registration for training programs.
  • Comfortable traveling to various community and training sites as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented care.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach within the community to connect individuals with recovery support services and program resources
  • Build and maintain partnerships with local organizations including detox programs, outpatient treatment providers, recovery-based organizations, and the NYCH community
  • Represent the program at community events, meetings, and resource fairs to increase awareness of available services
  • Facilitate presentations, workshops, or informational sessions about recovery supports and program offerings
  • Engage individuals in the community and provide information about recovery pathways and available resources
  • Conduct follow-up outreach to participants who have been lost to contact in order to re-engage them in services
  • Assist individuals with accessing services and navigating community resources
  • Maintain documentation of outreach efforts, community contacts, and participant engagement activities
  • Collaborate with internal staff to coordinate outreach strategies and strengthen community partnerships
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and program development activities
