About The Position

The Outdoor Recreation Coordinator provides professional management and supervision for the daily operations of University Recreation Outdoor Programs. This includes managing outdoor equipment rental, a 40-foot climbing wall, a bike repair shop, an experiential education program, an outdoor trip program, and special events. Programming and activities take place at two on-campus locations: the Outdoor Rental Center at the Student Recreation Center and the Climbing Wall at the Witt Student Activity Center. These programs focus on health, holistic wellness, safety education, and leadership development. The role involves strategic planning with the Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation to meet programmatic, financial, and experiential goals. It also includes recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising 25-35 student staff employees, performing skills assessments and performance evaluations, creating a programmatic calendar, scheduling facilities, managing staff, developing and executing revenue-producing programs, assisting with departmental safety trainings, and performing high-level risk assessments. Administrative tasks such as payroll, budgeting, and accounting are also part of the role, with personal accountability for financial reporting and internal processes and controls. The coordinator assists in providing opportunities that positively impact students' physical, social, and emotional well-being through collaboration with other campus units. The position requires being on-call for emergencies in the program area, with potential evening, weekend, and holiday work. The coordinator is responsible for completing required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace, as well as holding staff accountable for their training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Some outdoor recreation programming experience.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license.
  • At least 19 years of age at time of hire.
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies.
  • Effective customer relations, strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple work responsibilities in time-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to supervise and delegate work to student staff.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to manage staff at multiple indoor and outdoor venues for a wide array of activities.
  • Ability to teach and train multiple outdoor disciplines such as backpacking, rock climbing, cycling, caving, challenge programming, canoeing, and/or kayaking.
  • Knowledge of outdoor adventure ethics and best practices.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and standard software applications (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, database management, etc.).
  • Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through: demonstrating self-awareness; understanding and valuing others.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Recreation Management, Sport Management, Higher Education, or similar field of study.
  • Two (2) years of progressive experience leading comprehensive outdoor recreation programs at the university/college level.
  • Knowledge of outdoor site management principles and practices.
  • Bicycle shop experience.
  • Passenger van driving experience.
  • Current American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED and First Aid Instructor.
  • Relevant professional certifications such as American Canoe Association level III or IV Canoe or Kayaking Instructor, AMGA or PCIA Single Pitch or Climbing Wall Instructor, and Swift Water Rescue.
  • Four (4) or more seasons of wilderness leadership experience preferred (season is 4-7 months of continual exposure).
  • Knowledge of educational theories for student development.
