About The Position

We have a new opening for a full-time Orthopedic Surgeon Physician at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. A contracted Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) San Diego would be responsible for a comprehensive range of clinical and surgical duties, catering to a diverse patient population of active-duty military personnel, their dependents, and retirees. The surgeon would be an integral part of the Orthopedic Surgery Department. The role involves performing a full range of physician services, directing and instructing other healthcare professionals, examining, diagnosing, treating, and prescribing courses of treatment. It also includes providing preventive and health maintenance care, ordering diagnostic tests, and requesting consultations or referrals. The position requires technical proficiency in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures, and participating in in-service training, all while adhering to Government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocols. The surgeon will manage both outpatient and inpatient consultations, develop non-surgical treatment plans, and oversee all phases of surgical care. The patient population includes active-duty military, dependents, retirees, and pediatric patients, with a wide range of conditions from sports-related injuries to degenerative conditions. The surgeon will perform a full spectrum of foot and ankle surgeries, manage high-acuity and complex cases including trauma and severe extremity injuries, and participate in limb salvage procedures. Administrative duties include maintaining accurate electronic medical records. As NMCSD is a major teaching hospital, the surgeon will participate in the education and training of residents, medical students, and other medical personnel. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team is essential. On-call responsibilities are required to provide urgent/emergent orthopedic care. A key aspect of the role is to contribute to the operational readiness of active-duty service members. Opportunities for clinical and basic science research are available and encouraged. New hires are expected to maintain CME for licensure and board certification.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
  • Possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.
  • Successfully completed the required accredited residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Orthopedic Surgery).
  • Successfully completed the required fellowship training in the subspecialty of the position to be filled (Foot and Ankle).
  • Successfully completed the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery Board certification.
  • Maintain their board certification status during their time at NMCSD.
  • Possess current American Heart Assoc or American Red Cross BLS, ACLS & PALS certifications.
  • Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the facility.
  • Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities.
  • Examine, diagnose, treat or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
  • Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
  • Order diagnostic tests as applicable as well as request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
  • Technically proficient in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members.
  • Conduct thorough patient evaluations, including detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and the ordering and interpretation of diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs.
  • Develop and oversee non-surgical treatment plans for a wide array of foot and ankle conditions.
  • Manage all phases of surgical care, from initial pre-operative assessments and patient education to post-operative follow-up, wound care, and rehabilitation protocols.
  • Perform a full spectrum of foot and ankle surgeries, including but not limited to: Fracture fixation and trauma reconstruction for injuries sustained in both combat and non-combat settings; Arthroscopic procedures for joint and cartilage repair; Total ankle replacements and other joint reconstruction surgeries; Tendon and ligament repair and reconstruction; Correction of complex foot and ankle deformities.
  • Manage complex, high-energy trauma, and severe extremity injuries.
  • Participate in complex limb salvage procedures, which may involve collaboration with other surgical subspecialties such as plastic and vascular surgery.
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records for all patient encounters and surgical procedures.
  • Participate in the education and training of residents, medical students, and other medical personnel.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including other orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, physical therapists, and nurses to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide urgent/emergent orthopedic care to all Tricare beneficiaries.
  • Contribute to the operational readiness of active-duty service members by providing timely and effective care that enables them to return to their duties.
  • Maintain CME for the purpose of licensure and American Board of Orthopedic Surgery certification.
