Optimization Software Engineer (Civil Aviation)

ASI•Boston, MA
•$135,000 - $265,000

About The Position

ASI is hiring an Optimization Software Engineer for its Civil Aviation team. The team is modernizing America’s air traffic control system by developing next-generation trajectory prediction and decision-support systems, while preparing the airspace for commercial space operations and advanced air mobility. This mission-critical work involves safely coordinating tens of thousands of daily flights in a dynamic, safety-critical environment. In this role, you will design algorithms to track and plan trajectories for thousands of aircraft operating in the National Airspace System. You will apply operations research, optimization, statistics, and data science to design, analyze, and implement software that helps monitor and control complex airspace in real time. Employment offers are contingent on the ability to obtain required authorizations for the contemplated job duties; some contracts have U.S. immigration status and location restrictions because ASI works with export-controlled technology and restricted U.S. Government data.

Requirements

  • Experience designing algorithms for mission-critical applications.
  • Experience with optimization algorithms, such as linear programming, mixed integer linear programming, constraint satisfaction, and greedy algorithms.
  • Experience analyzing large data sets and using statistical and machine learning techniques to build models.
  • Experience with modern programming languages such as Rust and Python.
  • Strong collaboration skills and comfort working across teams in a mission-critical environment.
  • Proficiency in leveraging modern LLM tools to accelerate development workflows and enhance code quality.

Nice To Haves

  • Domain experience in logistics, aviation, or related fields involving large-scale planning.

Responsibilities

  • Design algorithms to track and plan trajectories for aircraft in the National Airspace System.
  • Apply operations research, optimization, statistics, and data science to design, analyze, and implement software for real-time airspace monitoring and control.
