About The Position

This is entry-level work performing routine tasks under direct supervision with well-defined procedures with few changes required. The job requires a basic knowledge of counseling techniques and social work principles and practices. Incumbents must use skill in applying instructions to accomplish different job functions. The Family Support Worker provides breastfeeding education and support to Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for WIC clients in various locations throughout the county. He/she provides services in the WIC Program in accordance with the policies of the state WIC Program and regulations as stated in DHM 150-24. Assignment of duty station, hours and days worked may vary as needed. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Nutritionist in the assigned area in collaboration with the Breastfeeding Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Required to have breastfed at least one baby.
  • Must be willing to be on-call nights (up to 9pm) and weekends (8am to 9pm).
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation that can be used for work purposes.
  • Must be willing to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
  • Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently or previously been a WIC client, experienced exclusively breastfeeding, preferably exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months; and ideally, exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months with continued breastfeeding for 12 month.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED

Responsibilities

  • Educate WIC pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum mothers and family members on breastfeeding related issues in assigned sites, by telephone, at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC agency.
  • Provide basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC mothers to help them to successfully establish breastfeeding, overcome common barriers to breastfeeding, and prevent and handle common breastfeeding problems or concerns.
  • Conduct breastfeeding classes and facilitate support groups.
  • Maintain the breastfeeding warmline after hours; triage, give appointments and/or counsel as appropriate.
  • Document breastfeeding contacts in the FL-Wise system in accordance with department policy. Documentation is accurate, clear, and legible for all contacts made with WIC clients.
  • Manage caseload of assigned WIC clients and contact clients according to established procedures, maintaining client confidentiality.
  • Coordinate services for clients and makes referrals to appropriate agencies as needed.
  • Assist the local WIC agency in outreach, promoting breastfeeding through special projects and duties as assigned.
  • Understand WIC eligibility criteria and programmatic requirements in order to answer basic questions about WIC and make appropriate referrals.
  • Attend mandatory and scheduled training.
  • Adhere to FDOH in Duval County and Division of Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention (NCDP) policies and procedures pertaining to client confidentially, and data security.
  • Accurate and timely submission of Employee Activity Record (EARs), time records, travel logs, monthly report of activities and other reports are submitted to the NCDP Administrative Office.
  • Answer telephones, file and perform travel in relation to above duties and for professional development.
