About The Position

Ottawa Public Library (OPL) provides accessible, innovative library and information services throughout the City of Ottawa, that meet the unique needs of diverse communities, delivered through a range of vehicles and reflecting a citizen-centred approach. You oversee the Integrated Library System (ILS) and related applications, perform database maintenance; design and/or generate ILS statistical reports; provide support to staff and users; liaise and consult with management to identify opportunities for improvements; and participate on project teams, committees and working groups as required. Work is performed within the context of the policies and framework of the Library corporate culture as embodied in the Mission Statement, Core Values, Customer Experience Guidelines and the Canadian Federation of Library Association position statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion, with particular emphasis on providing customer service excellence.

Requirements

  • Completion of 2 year Library Technician Diploma
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience in providing database and computing support for a multi branch operation
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems (ILS)
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Technical acumen and aptitude
  • Knowledge of microcomputer hardware, software and various peripherals
  • Knowledge of Microsoft NT and MS Windows
  • Knowledge of library operations, including circulation control, catalogue searching, and database maintenance
  • Ability to prepare and analyze statistics
  • Knowledge of automated information retrieval
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques and protocols
  • Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation
  • Data-entry, retrieval and keyboarding skills including use of standard office equipment, including operating an IBM compatible computer in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft NT
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to deal with staff/public and handle multiple tasks concurrently
  • Customer service orientation, including the use of tact, discretion and confidentiality
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Exercise effective judgment and independent decision-making capabilities
  • Well-developed organization skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Able to work independently and effectively as a team member
  • Research skills, including the ability to learn new technology and apply its use to the current integrated systems structure, to further technological innovation and access for both internal and external clients
  • English oral, reading, writing
