About The Position

Old Dominion Freight Line is hiring an Operations Supervisor to manage a shift or section in a service center. The supervisor is responsible for meeting department, shift, service-center, and company standards for safety, quality, efficiency, cost, service and delivery, training and development, and housekeeping. This leadership role oversees employees and freight operations, works closely with service-center management, and supports continuous improvement and customer service.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 2 years of operations experience, preferably in the transportation industry.
• Working knowledge of AS400 and Microsoft Office.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Availability to work assigned shifts as needed based on customer pickup and delivery schedules.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and evaluate employee safety daily and provide training on safety processes as needed.
• Oversee safe and efficient freight planning, loading, and unloading throughout the shift.
• Teach and evaluate safe lifting techniques and use safe lifting practices when needed.
• Maintain housekeeping within the shift to support safety and productivity.
• Manage, assign, and supervise pickups and deliveries to ensure effective use and development of employees and equipment while meeting company and customer expectations.
• Coordinate with service-center management to meet daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly business objectives.
• Provide instructions, analyses, suggestions, and ideas to improve operations within the shift, department, and facility.
• Give employees ongoing positive and constructive feedback on operational performance and productivity measures.
• Conduct daily inspections for compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, including OSHA and DOT requirements.
• Ensure trailers are loaded correctly for safe freight transport.
• Strive for continuous improvement in all areas of service-center operations.
• Operate AS400, BLU, DYMS, and other company computer or freight-monitoring systems to monitor freight movement.
• Complete forklift job training and operate a forklift as needed.
• Conduct daily shift meetings.
• Make timely decisions based on volume levels and communicate schedules to affected employees.
• Inspect tools and equipment for safe working condition and direct correction of improper or adverse conditions.
• Understand and ensure compliance with company and government regulations.
• Work assigned shifts as needed and remain available according to customer pickup and delivery schedules.
• Use company technology to monitor shipment locations and communicate throughout the day with associates, customers, and team members, verbally and through computer systems.
• Complete company and government freight-movement forms, including shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, inter-terminal movement forms, and exception forms.
• Manage department staff, including hiring and disciplinary action.
