About The Position

Relay is hiring an Operations Manager to help launch and scale its operations in the Americas. Reporting to the Site Manager/Head of Site, the role runs shifts at a Hybrid Sort Centre and leads 50–100+ operatives through high-volume, time-sensitive sortation. The manager works on the floor during every shift and is accountable for improving site performance across key metrics. The position combines live operational leadership with continuous improvement. It involves building and ensuring adoption of operational controls, cadences, metrics, standard operating procedures, and change-management practices, while planning labor and training for future shifts. The manager also leads operational changes—such as introducing robotics, new sortation technology, or new clients—within an active operation. Relay describes its culture as intellectually vibrant, driven by first-principles thinking, tight feedback loops, and experimentation. Its stated values include precision, ambitious execution, continuous improvement, ownership, investment in teammates, and creating shared success. Relay is an equal-opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.

Requirements

  • Experience scaling something from zero, such as a site, market, process, or program.
  • Experience managing a physical operation with frontline workers and hard deadlines; examples include quick commerce, grocery, e-commerce fulfillment, last mile, 3PL, food production, airport ground handling, or rail.
  • Strong communication and people-management skills, including briefing frontline teams and communicating issues to senior leadership.
  • Experience building an operational mechanism—such as a control, cadence, metric, or document standard—that changed how frontline teams worked.
  • Ability to own and explain metrics, including a metric created or redefined, why the prior metric was inadequate, and what changed as a result.
  • Frontline experience in at least one of these forms: personally leading frontline teams; working day to day alongside a frontline population without a reporting line; or being accountable for outcomes delivered by frontline workers not employed by the candidate.
  • Strong technical fundamentals and entrepreneurial drive.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in parcels, fulfillment, or sortation is not required; Relay notes that some of its talented employees did not have this experience.
  • Relevant backgrounds may include logistics or e-commerce program management, operations excellence and continuous improvement, strategy and operations, transformation management, launch and expansion management, or regional operations management.
  • Experience in corporate operations, central operations at large retailers or carriers, quick commerce, or marketplace operators.
  • Consulting experience involving implementation and rollout, rather than recommendations alone.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver shift plans end to end, including people deployment, throughput, quality standards, and health and safety compliance.
  • Lead, develop, and performance-manage a frontline team of 50–100+ operatives.
  • Build and secure adoption of operational controls, cadences, metrics, standard operating procedures, and change-management mechanisms.
  • Plan ahead for future shifts, including labor, training, and foreseeable risks.
  • Own end-of-shift handovers, communicating what happened, what is at risk, and what the next shift needs to know.
  • Make decisions during volume peaks, outages, and labor gaps; triage problems, contain their impact, and restore operational flow.
  • Write and present clear briefs, escalations, handovers, and post-incident reviews.
  • Implement changes in a live operation, including potential robotics, new sortation technology, and new client launches, and bring the team along through those changes.
  • Improve site performance measurably across key metrics.
