About The Position

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Office Assistant 1 position at the Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) in Mackenzie Point, Alaska. This position reports to the Mailroom Staff Sergeant and is responsible for sorting, x-raying, inspecting, scanning, and delivering mail for inmates and staff in accordance with Department of Corrections policy and procedure. The role also involves receiving outgoing mail, determining cost-effective shipping methods, affixing postage, maintaining logs for mail and postage meters, and managing inmate postage charges.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.; OR Acceptance in full standing by an accredited college (this includes acceptance in a concurrent enrollment or dual enrollment program); OR A Career Readiness Certificate with ACT WorkKeys® scores of skill level 3 or higher in: Graphic Literacy (formerly Locating Information), Applied Math, and Workplace Documents (formerly Reading for Information).
  • Possess attention to detail.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including software applications, databases, and automated systems.
  • Possess interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective relationships.
  • Possess oral and written communication skills to express information effectively and make clear presentations.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older on or before the first day of employment if operating a State vehicle.
  • Must have a legal right to accept employment in the United States.
  • Must pass a criminal history check.
  • Must be fingerprinted.

Responsibilities

  • Sort, x-ray, inspect, scan, and deliver mail for up to 1,500 inmates and 350 staff in accordance with State of Alaska Department of Corrections policy and procedure.
  • Receive outgoing mail from staff and inmates.
  • Determine the most cost-effective method for shipping options.
  • Affix appropriate postage.
  • Maintain a log for all incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Maintain a log for the postage meter.
  • Input inmate postage charges to the inmate accounts.
  • Log and track postage meter balance.
  • Contact Administrative Officer in a timely manner to have funds added to the postage meter.
