About The Position

The Offender Grievance Coordinator monitors the grievance procedure in its entirety—including informal complaints, emergency grievances, and regular grievances—to ensure compliance with Department of Corrections policy. The coordinator investigates inmate grievances, consults with staff and inmates to resolve problems and investigate claims, and meets with inmates as needed. The position prepares correspondence responses as required by the Operations Manager and may coordinate access to the Law Library and Institutional Attorney.

Requirements

• Considerable knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections operations, policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge of federal and state laws governing the rights of incarcerated people.
• Ability to conduct interviews and investigations, research, and present findings clearly and accurately.
• Ability to analyze data.
• Ability to provide guidance and consultation to inmates needing assistance.
• Ability to interpret and follow oral and written rules and regulations.
• Ability to maintain harmonious working and public relations.
• Ability to organize and complete work assignments with minimal guidance from others.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in a corrections facility providing direct contact with inmates.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access.
• Ability to learn new practices, procedures, and equipment operations.
• Ability to understand and apply operating procedures.
