About The Position

This role involves delivering a comprehensive range of occupational rehabilitative services under the guidance of a credentialed provider. The Occupational Therapy Assistant will utilize assessment tools, intervention techniques, and treatment modalities as outlined in the care plan. This position requires the ability to implement complex instructions for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, adapting to diverse learning styles. The assistant will also be involved in identifying, recommending, and fabricating adaptive devices and equipment, and implementing therapeutic activities and treatments. Key responsibilities include instructing patients and caregivers in functional activities, observing patient responses, reporting progress to the supervising therapist, and fitting patients for orthotic and prosthetic devices. Additionally, the role involves providing technical supervision to students and training staff, maintaining a safe clinic environment, and ensuring clear communication with providers.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Occupational Therapy Assistance.
  • Graduation from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education at the time of graduation.
  • One year of experience as an Occupational Therapy Assistant within the last two years.
  • Certification by the National Board of Certified Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • A current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.
  • A current Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
  • The ability to successfully pass a government background check/security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a comprehensive range of occupational rehabilitative services in accordance with the care plan established by a credentialed provider.
  • Employ assessment tools, intervention techniques, and treatment modalities as outlined in the care plan provided by a credentialed provider.
  • Utilize complex and multi-step instructions with patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals, adapting these instructions to accommodate the diverse learning styles of the individuals receiving the guidance.
  • Identify, recommend, and fabricate, as necessary, complex adaptive and assistive devices, durable medical equipment, and intricate dynamic splints, following consultation with the occupational therapist.
  • Implement a program of therapeutic activities and treatments for assigned patients as directed by the Occupational Therapist. Under supervision, provide treatments such as therapeutic exercises, activities of daily living (ADL/IADL) training, sensory integration techniques, various innovative technologies, and the application of physical agent modalities (e.g., hot packs, cold packs, paraffin).
  • Instruct, motivate, and assist patients and caregivers in acquiring and enhancing functional activities, including self-care, home management, and community reintegration skills.
  • Observe patients during treatment sessions, compile and evaluate data regarding patients' responses to treatment and progress, and report orally or in writing to the supervising therapist, including treatment progression and the development of discharge activities as directed.
  • Fit patients for, adjust, and provide training on the use and care of orthotic devices (splints), prosthetic devices, and adaptive supportive tools, such as dressing aids, reachers, and specialized utensils.
  • Provide technical supervision to students, training staff, and volunteers, ensuring compliance with the guidelines set forth by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), National Patient Safety Goals, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized clinic environment.
  • Serve as a departmental representative at meetings as required.
  • Ensure clear and open communication with providers to facilitate appropriate patient care.
