About The Position

The Occupational Health Nurse will serve as the primary clinical responder to workplace injuries, illnesses, and chemical exposures. This role involves performing triage and assessment, delivering first aid and emergency care, stabilizing patients, and determining the appropriate level of care. The nurse will also manage occupational injury and illness cases from evaluation to closure, provide clinical input for OSHA recordability, and manage medical surveillance programs. Additionally, the role includes conducting fitness-for-duty evaluations, supporting drug and alcohol testing programs, partnering with EHS on hazard assessments, trending health data, developing and delivering health training, administering wellness initiatives, and managing onsite medical facility operations. Maintaining confidential employee health information is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Nursing required
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Tennessee, or eligibility for Tennessee licensure by date of hire.
  • Minimum of three years of clinical RN experience.
  • Current BLS/CPR and AED certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and act decisively during medical emergencies while maintaining composure and sound clinical judgment.
  • Demonstrated discretion in handling confidential health information.
  • Ability to be medically qualified and fit-tested for respirator use and to wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Availability for emergency callout and off-shift consultation in support of a 24/7 operation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to work within electronic occupational health, EHS, and HRIS systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • At least two years’ experience in occupational health, emergency, critical care, or industrial nursing.
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or COHN-Specialist (COHN-S) through the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA recordkeeping requirements (29 CFR 1904) and the medical surveillance provisions of 29 CFR 1910.
  • Experience in chemical, petrochemical, or other high-hazard PSM-covered manufacturing.
  • Experience supporting a represented (union) workforce and working within a collective bargaining agreement.
  • CAOHC-certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist
  • NIOSH-approved spirometry certification
  • DOT-qualified urine specimen collector and Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT)
  • Case management certification (CCM or COHN-S/CM) with demonstrated workers' compensation cost-containment results.
  • Emergency Response Team, HAZMAT, or prehospital care experience.
  • Experience with occupational health information systems (e.g., Cority, Medgate, or equivalent)
  • ACLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary clinical responder to workplace injuries, illnesses, and chemical exposures, performing triage, assessment, first aid, emergency care, stabilization, and determining appropriate care levels.
  • Maintain site readiness for exposure events, including stewardship of cyanide antidote inventory, exposure-response protocols, and coordination with local EMS and hospitals.
  • Manage occupational injury and illness cases end-to-end, including evaluation, referral, communication with providers, tracking work status, coordinating transitional duty, and case closure.
  • Provide clinical input for OSHA recordability and case classification, and support accurate maintenance of OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 records.
  • Maintain employee medical records in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.1020.
  • Own the scheduling, execution, tracking, and completion of regulated medical surveillance programs.
  • Conduct or coordinate post-offer, return-to-work, and fitness-for-duty evaluations.
  • Communicate work restrictions and functional capacity information to HR and management, supporting ADA and FMLA processes.
  • Support administration of the site's drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Partner with EHS and industrial hygiene resources on assessments and analyses, contributing occupational health input to PHAs and MOC reviews.
  • Lead ergonomic assessments and corrective recommendations, and administer heat and cold stress prevention programs.
  • Trend injury, illness, exposure, and clinic-visit data to identify patterns and escalate findings with recommended interventions.
  • Provide clinical perspective on shift-schedule and fatigue-related health risks.
  • Develop and deliver site training in first aid, CPR, AED use, bloodborne pathogens, heat illness recognition, and chemical exposure first response.
  • Provide medical training and skills maintenance to Emergency Response Team members and shift first responders.
  • Design and administer site health promotion and wellness initiatives.
  • Manage onsite medical facility operations, including equipment inventory, calibration, stocking, medical waste handling, budget input, and vendor/provider coordination.
  • Maintain employee health information in confidential files.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
