About The Position

The Occupational Health Nurse administers and evaluates the Occupational Health Program, ensuring compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws and professional requirements/policies pertaining to Occupational Health and Worker’s Compensation. This role provides reports to appropriate hospital entities, performs health care screening, evaluation, and counseling, and conducts educational and training components of the program. The nurse obtains health histories, performs basic physical examinations, contributes to a healthier working environment through counseling and training, and performs pre-employment health screening. This position tracks and follows up on immunization requirements, collaborates with Human Resources on work-related injuries/illnesses, and assists with return-to-work assessments. The nurse also collaborates with Infection Prevention, Risk Management, Hospital Administration, and Department Supervisors. Responsibilities include initiating referrals for medical care, maintaining employee medical files securely and confidentially, and administering the Facilities Respiratory Protection Program, including respirator mask fitting and training. The nurse must be available to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
  • Valid and unrestricted license in any U.S. State of Territory.
  • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
  • Applicant must have a valid, unrestricted insurable driver’s license.
  • Resume and references are required.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and evaluates the Occupational Health Program, ensuring compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws and professional requirements/policies pertaining to Occupational Health and Worker’s Compensation.
  • Provides reports to appropriate hospital entities (i.e., Leadership Council, Infection Control Committee, etc.) as required.
  • Performs the health care screening, evaluation and counseling and the educational and training components of the Occupational Health Program.
  • Obtains health histories, performs basic physical examinations; for example, takes height, weight, checks vision and hearing, takes pulse and blood pressure and obtains and labels specimens as required for laboratory analysis.
  • Contributes toward a healthier working environment and a more effective work force through counseling and training employees in health and well-being practices.
  • Performs pre-employment health screening for new employees to ensure all immunization and TB screening requirements are met.
  • Tracks and provides follow-up to ensure all permanent, contracted and Commissioned Corps staff are compliant with ongoing immunization requirements.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources to identifying and monitor employees with work-related injuries or illnesses.
  • When appropriate assists with return to work and/or fitness for duty assessment.
  • Collaborates with the Infection Preventionist, Director of Risk Management, Hospital Administration and Department Supervisors and Human Resources.
  • Initiates referrals for general and specialized medical care and rehabilitative services when appropriate.
  • Maintains employee medical files (EMF) to include immunizations status, PPO/TB status, work related exposures and injuries, and other relevant health-related information.
  • Maintains EMF in a secure manner with controlled access according to personnel regulations, ensuring strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Administers the Facilities Respiratory Protection Program. This includes respirator mask fitting, training employees to be competent with Positive Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR’s), in addition to conducting regular fit-testing for hospital approved N-95 respirators as needed for specific job roles.
  • Must be available to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
