The Nursing Graduate practices only under the direct supervision of a registered nurse who is physically present on the unit. The supervising registered nurse must cosign medication transcription, medication administration, and nursing documentation, and continually observe, assist, coordinate, evaluate, and monitor the Nursing Graduate. The Nursing Graduate must use the initials NG after their name and document in the medical record using the abbreviation NG. After successfully completing skill validation, the Nursing Graduate may transcribe medication orders according to written policies and procedures, administer medications and controlled substances, and sign controlled-substance sheets. They may perform patient assessments only after the registered nurse has completed the initial assessment or the first assessment of the shift. They may also perform and document routine procedures taught in their generic nursing program, including placing nasogastric tubes, performing urinary catheterizations, applying sterile dressings, checking blood sugar, and obtaining specimens. The Nursing Graduate must cease practice in this capacity no later than 120 days after submitting an application to the Board of Nursing, or immediately upon failing the second NCLEX examination. They may not work without the physical presence and direct supervision of a registered nurse; present or practice themselves as an RN or LPN; be counted as staff for staffing-pattern purposes; accept charge responsibilities; perform initial or first-of-shift patient assessments; develop patient plans of care; evaluate or document patient discharge; or independently administer medications or intravenous therapy.
