About The Position

The Nurse Director provides clinical and operational leadership for nursing practice and patient care delivery within assigned departments or clinics. This position ensures high-quality, evidence-based nursing care and efficient clinical operations that align with the mission, vision, and values of Fred Hutch. The Nurse Director works collaboratively with physician leaders, administrative partners, and other departments to meet patient care, quality, and operational goals. This leader drives nursing excellence through consistent standards of practice, process improvement, and workforce development. The Nurse Director serves as a key liaison between clinical staff, medical staff, and organizational leadership to ensure safe, effective, patient-centered care and foster a culture of collaboration and professional growth. This position will be 1.0FTE/full-time, Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing or a related healthcare field required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • 5+ years in progressive nursing leadership role
  • Must have current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license or current NLC multistate license (MSL); and MSL with Primary State of Residence to WA is required within 60 days of hire. This requirement may be waived under specific circumstances, subject to approval.
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years
  • Proven success managing nursing teams and operations within complex healthcare settings.
  • Experience with budget oversight and resource management.
  • Skilled in staff development, coaching, and performance management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to foster collaboration across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through change and maintain focus on quality and safety.
  • Emotional intelligence, resilience, and adaptability in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Oncology specific certification.
  • National certification in nursing administration or clinical specialty preferred.
  • Oncology nursing leadership experience in ambulatory or inpatient care.
  • Experience in academic medical center operations or research integration.
  • Knowledge of Magnet® principles, shared governance, and nursing professional practice models.
  • Strong analytical, project management, and process improvement skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strong, visible nursing leadership for teams across assigned areas.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop nurse managers, supervisors, and frontline nurses to support professional growth and retention.
  • Oversee workforce planning, staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation to meet patient care demands.
  • Ensure effective onboarding, orientation, and ongoing competency development for nursing staff.
  • Promote nursing engagement, shared governance, and participation in organizational initiatives.
  • Evaluate staff performance and provide constructive feedback and support for skill development.
  • Lead and coordinate nursing operations to deliver safe, efficient, and compassionate care.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor departmental goals aligned with quality, patient experience, and operational priorities.
  • Collaborate with physician and multidisciplinary teams to optimize workflows and improve care delivery.
  • Oversee department activities related to quality improvement, risk management, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure nursing standards of practice align with organizational policies, professional standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • Support process improvement and evidence-based models to improve patient and staff experience.
  • Participate in budget planning and management for assigned departments.
  • Monitor expenses, staffing, and productivity, ensuring responsible use of resources.
  • Recommend operational efficiencies and cost-containment strategies while maintaining quality care.
  • Maintain currency in nursing best practices, regulatory requirements, and oncology care trends.
  • Represent nursing leadership in committees and workgroups to advance patient care and nursing practice.
  • Support integration of research and clinical innovation into nursing practice.
