The Nursing Assistant (NA) assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This role involves direct patient care activities such as bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, and assisting with ambulation and transfers. The NA is responsible for accurately measuring and documenting vital signs, intake and output, and daily weights, as well as documenting patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Depending on unit requirements and under RN direction, the NA may also perform tasks such as removing IVs, providing post-mortem care, and performing bladder scans. Adherence to infection prevention policies, including hand hygiene and aseptic techniques, is crucial. The role requires the ability to provide age-appropriate care based on knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan.
