The ICU Nursing Assistant assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This role involves direct patient care activities such as bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, and assisting with ambulation and positioning. The Nursing Assistant is responsible for accurately measuring and documenting vital signs, intake and output, and daily weights, as well as maintaining patient records in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). They perform purposeful rounding, promptly communicating patient and family needs to the RN. The position also includes assisting with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring patient call lights are accessible and responsive, and collecting specimens for testing. Additionally, the role involves performing errands, maintaining stock for the nursing area, cleaning equipment, and performing patient positioning and transporting duties that require physical exertion. Tasks related to nutritional needs, skin integrity, and the provision of special patient supplies are also part of the responsibilities. Depending on unit requirements and under RN direction, the Nursing Assistant may also perform tasks such as removing IVs, providing post-mortem care, and performing bladder scans. Adherence to infection prevention policies, including hand hygiene and aseptic procedures, is crucial. The role requires the ability to provide age-appropriate care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan.
