About The Position

The Nurse Tech works in the 36-bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at Meijer Heart Center, caring for highly acute post-cardiac and advanced heart failure patients. Patients and care needs may include heart/lung transplant patients, post-operative open-heart patients, and a range of ICU devices. The role supports quality patient care as part of a team under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).

Orientation includes four classroom days, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by 11 weeks of floor orientation on day shift. Weekday availability is needed during orientation, including at least two weekdays. The position is scheduled for Thursdays and Sundays and is listed as a night-shift, part-time role with 24 weekly scheduled hours. Nurse Techs may be floated to other units to provide one-to-one patient safety observation for an entire shift.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days.
• At least two weekdays available during the 11-week floor orientation.
• Availability for the scheduled shifts on Thursdays and Sundays.

Responsibilities

• Assist with complex ICU procedures, including placing arterial lines.
• Take vital signs and check blood sugars.
• Provide bed baths, assist with ambulation, provide wound care, and perform catheterization.
• Chart and complete required documentation accurately and on time.
• Act as a safety attendant for patients, including providing one-to-one patient safety observation when floated to other units.
• Provide input into the development of individualized plans of care.
• Explain the nursing technician role to patients, families, and health team members.
• Support safe, quality, and cost-effective patient care.
• Clean patient environments, work areas, and equipment; troubleshoot equipment problems and report malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
• Demonstrate high moral and ethical standards and advocate for the privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff, and organizational data.
