The Nurse Residency Program is a year-long experience designed to support the transition from college to professional nursing practice. After completion of the residency year, there is a minimum 1-year commitment to the unit of hire. Once this commitment is satisfied, the nurse is eligible to transfer within the Adventist HealthCare system. During the first year, the residency team collaborates with unit leaders, preceptors, and the resident to ensure a successful transition. A prescribed orientation period, based on the specialty of hire, is provided. During orientation, the nurse works under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor to acquire the RN role. Monthly, nurse residents from across the AHC system attend a 4-hour seminar for debriefing clinical experiences, engaging with leaders, and building community with peers. After orientation, the nurse remains a resident through the calendar year with continuous support from the Nurse Residency Team. On the unit, the preceptor serves as a mentor after the transition to independence.
