The Nurse Residency Program is a year-long experience designed to support the transition from college to professional nursing practice. After completion of the residency year, there is a minimum 1-year commitment to the unit of hire. During the first year, the residency team collaborates with unit leaders, preceptors, and the resident to ensure a successful transition. A prescribed orientation period, based on the specialty of hire, is included. During orientation, the nurse resident works under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. Monthly seminars across the AHC system provide opportunities to debrief clinical experiences, engage with leaders, and build community with peers. After orientation, the individual remains a nurse resident through the calendar year with continuous support from the Nurse Residency Team. On the unit, the preceptor serves as a mentor after the transition to independence.
