About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) works collaboratively with the healthcare team to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served on the assigned unit. The role emphasizes health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention, and the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic diseases. It involves significant autonomy, so the NP must be highly motivated and able to work independently. As an Advanced Practice Nurse, the NP demonstrates leadership as a mentor, educator, researcher, and provider, and practices within the scope defined by the Arizona Board of Nursing and the organization. Nursing practice is theory-based and evidence-based, uses a Shared Governance model for decision-making, and follows organizational performance standards and initiatives. The NP provides holistic, patient- and family-focused care through therapeutic partnerships, expert clinical judgment, reflective and evidence-guided practice, and diverse approaches to health and illness management. The NP performs or collaborates with physicians on histories and physical examinations, orders and interprets diagnostic studies, prescribes medications, consults ancillary departments and specialists, and supports transitions between levels of care, including discharge. The role also includes coaching and consulting with nursing staff and healthcare providers; supporting clinical skill development, critical thinking, discharge planning, and effective nurse-physician-patient-family communication; and mentoring staff nurses in patient- and family-centered care while maintaining professional and specialty standards. The NP independently and collaboratively conducts and supports research, evidence-based practice, and process-improvement projects, and helps incorporate current research and other evidence into practice. The position also encompasses clinical, professional, and systems leadership; ethical decision-making; and consideration of reimbursement and business practices, marketing and contracting, legal and regulatory requirements, credentialing, health policy, organizational structure and culture, outcome evaluation, and performance improvement.
