About The Position

Supervises the care of patients seen in the Orangeburg infusion suite and staffs a rapid access clinic. This role involves direct patient care, including taking comprehensive histories, performing physical examinations, evaluating and treating patients based on diagnostic results, initiating referrals, and documenting/billing for care provided. The position utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making, participates in quality improvement activities, and supports organizational accreditation and compliance. The role also involves potential precepting of students and facilitating the learning of new team members. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician and will report directly to them. Responsibilities include providing care to patients with oncology urgent needs, staffing the rapid access clinic, covering the Orangeburg infusion suite, supervising infusion nurses, managing infusion patients (including chemo, fluids, and other medications) in collaboration with the ordering physician, coordinating therapy initiation, reviewing labs, signing off on infusion encounters, and triaging infusion patient phone calls. The role also includes participation in weekly tumor boards and team meetings, with rotating infusion suite coverage on weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • OR Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN (AGPNP/ANP, FNP).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be current and complete prior to start date.
  • If applicable, DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.

  • Previous hematology oncology APP experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to patients through comprehensive history taking and physical examinations.

  • Provides care to patients with oncology urgent needs and staffs rapid access clinic.
  • Provides coverage in the infusion suite, supervising care provided by infusion nurses.
  • Collaborates with ordering physician to manage infusion patients, including chemo, fluids, and other medications.
  • Works collaboratively with nursing and operation managers to instill teamwork.
  • Coordinates the initiation of therapy, reviews labs, and supports physicians ordering, responsible for signing off on all infusion encounters.
  • Receives and triages infusion patient phone calls, responding to routine questions and referring complex issues to the physician.
  • Rotating infusion suite coverage on weekends and holidays.
  • Participates in weekly tumor boards and team meetings.
