Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Cardiothoracic Surgery
About The Position
This is an outpatient clinic position for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant specializing in Cardiothoracic Surgery. The role involves seeing pre-operative and post-operative cardiac and thoracic surgery patients, as well as managing add-on/sick visits. Responsibilities include handling patient portal messages, medication refills, assisting outpatient nurses with FMLA paperwork, and placing orders. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will utilize advanced health assessment and decision-making skills, working collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care across the continuum. This includes ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medications and treatments, and providing patient teaching and counseling. The role also involves monitoring therapeutic interventions, making referrals, and performing minor procedures as approved. Demonstrating knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan, assessing age-specific needs, and interpreting patient data are essential. The individual is expected to show leadership through committee involvement, team projects, education, research, and performance improvement initiatives. Practice is based on the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Advanced Practice Registered Nursing, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and Rules of the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
Requirements
- Nurse Practitioner: Masters-prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program.
- Nurse Practitioner: Current AZ RN and APRN license and certification as an FNP or ANP.
- Physician Assistant: Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Physician Assistant: Current PA certification by NCCPA.
- Physician Assistant: Registration as a PA by the AZ State Board of Medical Practice.
- Active BLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross at start date.
- DEA registration required.

Responsibilities
- See pre-op and post-op cardiac and thoracic surgery patients.
- Manage add-on/sick visits, including new symptoms, wound checks, and chest tube management/care.
- Handle in-basket portal messages from patients.
- Process medication refills.
- Assist outpatient nurses with FMLA paperwork and placing orders.
- Provide primary health care and/or specialty-specific care.
- Perform comprehensive assessments.
- Order, conduct, and interpret diagnostic tests.
- Prescribe pharmacological agents and treatments.
- Provide non-pharmacological therapies.
- Teach and counsel individuals, families, and groups (Nurse Practitioners).
- Monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions (Physician Assistants).
- Make appropriate referrals.
- Perform minor procedures as approved by the AZ Regulatory Board of Physician Assistants.
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development of the life span.
- Assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret information relative to age-specific needs.
- Demonstrate leadership through involvement on committees and team projects, education, and research.
- Actively seek to improve practice through performance improvement initiatives.
- Be active in professional organizations and participate in community activities.
