About The Position

The Nurse Manager (NM) actualizes the vision, mission and values for Ellis Medicine and maintains standards of the practice for nursing as defined by the American Nurses Association, Code of Ethics, Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice and Nursing’s Social Policy Statement. The Nurse Manager participates in performance improvement/research activities; maintains professional practice standards and clinical expertise; and demonstrates leadership skills. The Nurse Manager demonstrates core and unit specific competencies based on the patient population served. This position is accountable for maintaining all clinical administrative functions (patient care delivery, fiscal, material, and human resources) of nursing unit(s) on a 24-hour basis. The position is responsible to create an environment in which autonomy is nurtured, encouraged, and reflected in a highly competent workforce capable of providing quality care. Professional interdisciplinary collaboration, communication and teamwork enacted enable care delivery to the customers and community to improve health and wellness. The position is responsible to uphold compliance with Ellis Medicine’s policies/procedures, service excellence standards and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Currently licensed in New York State as a Registered Nurse and a graduate of an approved school of nursing.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.
  • 1 year experience in psychiatric nursing services required.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationships, effective communication skills, (written, oral and interpersonal) ability to problem solve, ability to motivate, develop and coach individuals and groups, ability to appropriately confront issues, and ability to think creatively.
  • A strong commitment to furthering institutional performance measures through interdisciplinary teamwork is essential.
  • Knowledge of material safety data sheets and hazard drug list required.

Nice To Haves

  • MSN preferred or in progress.
  • 3-5 years acute care experience of patients with mental illness preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and monitor the nursing care delivery system to assure effective and efficient utilization of staff and other resources for the delivery of patient care.
  • Create/validate daily assignments that reflect appropriate assignments for all staff and their responsibility for patient care based on skill levels and patient care needs.
  • Assure that an adequate number of nursing personnel are scheduled and available to meet patient care needs which include proactively analyzing resources and personnel needs.
  • Discuss with staff the effectiveness of systems in place with focus on continuous improvement and the continuum of care.
  • Facilitate and promote the delivery of patient/family centered care to a diverse customer population by upholding the standards of excellent patient care always.
  • Manage unscheduled absences and tardiness according to policy.
  • Collaborate with Human Resource business partner regarding staff discipline according to policy.
  • Assess and reassign staff members to effectively and efficiently meet the needs of the unit and organization.
  • Collaborate with the Psychiatry Leadership team to create an environment for staff participation in performance improvement activities that assures the care of the particular patient population meets or exceeds institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of nationally recognized standards of care and evidence-based nursing practice for populations served.
  • Coach and guide staff in assessment, Nursing diagnosis and treatment of health/illness states, disease management, health promotion, and prevention of illness and risk behaviors among individuals, families, groups, and communities based on the focused psychiatric population.
  • Keep up to date with new and revised state and federal regulations and statutes related to inpatient psychiatric units and patient care.
  • Review and evaluate related policies and procedures and recommend revisions as needed.
  • Create for approval, new policies as needed, and share knowledge as appropriate.
  • Work in a collaborative manner with the unit core group and interdisciplinary team to track and trend key process and outcome data.
  • Assume leadership role in addressing issues identified.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence in the provision of nursing care for individual patients and populations as defined in unit scope of service.
  • Function as a resource to clinical staff in providing safe and quality patient care.
  • Educate staff on current and new policies and procedures.
  • Approve assigned personnel’s bi-weekly payroll and submit productivity stats each payroll period.
  • In conjunction with the Inpatient Clinical Supervisor, responsible for overall quality of patient care, ensuring compliance with internal and external regulatory standards.
  • Identify, respond, and investigate potential and actual risk management issues and prevent re-occurrence by establishing and implementing an action plan.
  • Provide ongoing communication, coordination, and collaboration with all members of the Health Care Team and develop effective professional working relationships with other organizational leaders.
  • Promote an environment that enhances safety, communication and satisfaction for patients and staff.
  • Guide staff in Service Recovery assessment, education, and implementation.
  • Identify ways to enhance the patient experience and educate staff on basic interactions with patients and families.
  • Serve as a resource and interpret Hospital policies and procedures as well as NYSNA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Participate in hiring, discipline, and termination practices to achieve and maintain optimal nursing care delivery on the unit.
  • Conduct performance appraisals timely and they reflect the provision of a framework for ongoing development of an employee.
  • Efficiently manage the financial and capital resources of the organization to support the fiscal viability.
  • Participate in organizational committees.
  • Demonstrate professional growth and accountability for own practice and facilitate the professional growth and development of assigned staff.
  • Maintain continuous education annually.
  • Escalate problems/challenges to designated DON and or Vice President of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer as appropriate.
  • Perform all other duties as required within the scope of practice.

  • Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates.
  • The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
