The Nurse Intern is an integral part of the patient care team and provides direct patient care and support services to the nursing unit under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Nurse Intern does not perform tasks requiring a nursing license and may care for patients with varying levels of illness under an RN’s direction. Routine responsibilities include bedside care, routine nursing procedures, patient transportation, stocking supplies, maintaining equipment, housekeeping duties as needed, and documenting care and procedures performed. Depending on the role and documented competency, the Nurse Intern may also perform blood sugar assessments, unlicensed respiratory therapy tasks, and/or EKGs. The role requires organizing multiple priorities and making independent decisions. Continued employment in the role is contingent on continuous enrollment in an RN or LPN program with progression toward completion.
