About The Position

HCA HealthONE Aurora is hiring a PRN Nurse Extern for its orthopedic unit. The Nurse Extern is a valued member of the nursing team who gains hands-on experience with the scope of the Registered Nurse role while supporting safe, compassionate patient care. The position helps build the skills and confidence needed to take on more advanced responsibilities while progressing through a nursing program.

The role provides essential patient care, performs basic nursing tasks as competency develops, documents care and communicates updates to the nursing team, supports patients and families in understanding care plans, and helps maintain a clean and safe patient environment. The Nurse Extern also participates in learning opportunities and works with a supervisor or preceptor on a personal career development plan.

Requirements

• Basic Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
• Associate degree or bachelor's degree.
• One year of experience required.
• No travel required.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility, comfort, and hygiene.
• Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other basic procedures as experience and competency develop.
• Document care accurately and communicate timely updates to the nursing team.
• Help patients and families understand their care plans and provide guidance related to health and recovery.
• Maintain clean, safe, and organized patient areas by following infection prevention practices and managing equipment.
• Participate in learning opportunities, share ideas for improving care, and partner with a supervisor or preceptor to develop a personal career plan.
