About The Position

The Nurse Extern performs patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role assists patients with personal care as needed, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, supports a safe care environment, and maintains necessary skills and competencies.

This is an eight-week program at Haymarket UVA Hospital, beginning June 14, 2027 and ending August 7, 2027. Following orientation, the schedule is 36–40 hours across three 12-hour shifts per week. Externs must be able to work either day or night shifts to match their preceptor’s schedule. Students may remain employed as Nurse Externs until graduation; after graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and complete the hiring process to continue employment.

The base compensation is $17.28 per hour. The position is classified as non-exempt.

Requirements

• Be a nursing student entering the final year of nursing school, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
• BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
• Must have flexibility to work day or night shifts according to the assigned preceptor’s schedule.
• Meet and maintain required certifications and licenses, as applicable.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with personal care as needed to support recovery during hospitalization.
• Perform basic nursing skills delegated by a Registered Nurse and in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Help provide a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
• Perform administrative support functions.
• Maintain necessary skills and competencies.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
