Nurse Extern - Intensive Critical Care Unit
About The Position
The Nurse Extern performs patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role assists patients with personal care to support recovery, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policy and procedures, helps provide a safe environment and safe delivery of care, performs administrative support functions, and maintains necessary skills and competencies. This is an eight-week program running June 14, 2027, through August 7, 2027. Following orientation, the schedule is 36–40 hours per week across three 12-hour shifts. Externs must be flexible to work either days or nights to match their preceptor’s schedule. The hourly base compensation is $17.28. The position is for nursing students entering their final year of nursing school, with expected graduation between December 2027 and May 2028. BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year. Students may remain employed as a Nurse Extern through graduation. After graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and continue through the hiring process.
