About The Position

The Nurse Extern performs patient-care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role assists patients with personal care, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, helps maintain a safe environment and safe delivery of care, and maintains necessary skills and competencies.

This eight-week program runs from June 14, 2027, through August 7, 2027. After orientation, externs work 36–40 hours per week in three 12-hour shifts. Candidates must be flexible to work days or nights according to their preceptor’s schedule. The role pays $17.28 per hour. Externs may remain employed until graduation; after graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and complete the hiring process to continue employment.

Requirements

• Must be a nursing student entering the final year of nursing school, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
• BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
• Must be flexible to work day or night shifts to match the preceptor’s schedule.
• Experience: None.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with personal care as needed to support optimal recovery during hospitalization.
• Perform basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Help provide a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
• Perform administrative support functions.
• Maintain necessary skills and competencies.
• Work with team members to develop or improve processes that support a remarkable patient experience.
• Coordinate patient care through delegation, problem solving, time management, and organizational skills.
• Partner with patients and families to resolve concerns related to healthcare delivery.
• Provide timely progress updates and communicate information that supports quality decisions.
• Maintain required certifications and licenses.
