About The Position

Performs patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse (RN) in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The Nurse Extern assists patients with personal care as needed for recovery, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, supports a safe environment and delivery of care, and maintains necessary skills and competencies. Additional duties may be assigned.

This is an eight-week program beginning June 14, 2027 and ending August 7, 2027. The schedule is 40 hours per week following orientation, Monday through Friday. Students may remain employed as Nurse Externs until graduation. After graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and continue through the hiring process.

The role is based at UVA Community Health, part of the UVA Health academic health system, which provides care through community hospitals, outpatient locations, and provider offices. The base compensation is $17.28 per hour; applicable incentive compensation may be available for eligible positions.

Requirements

• Be a nursing student entering the last year of nursing school, with a graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028, according to the posting’s program details.
• Have no prior experience requirement.
• Meet and maintain required certifications and licenses, as applicable.
• Be able to sit, stand, walk, and bend or stoop frequently; perform frequent repetitive body movements; communicate effectively; use auditory and visual skills; attend to detail; write legibly; and occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 20 pounds.
