About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern performs specific patient care duties to meet patients’ safety and comfort needs using the nursing process. The extern provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care, responds to emergent situations according to established procedures, and recognizes and participates in their own continuing education. This is a contingent position with day shifts.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Active enrollment in an accredited school of nursing.
• Completion of two clinical rotations, including one Med/Surg rotation in an acute care setting.
• To remain in the extern role, successfully complete each course and meet the academic institution’s standards for continued enrollment; employment will be rescinded if those standards are not met.
• Complete BLS Healthcare Provider training during orientation.
• Physical ability to lift and move patients, supplies, and equipment using appropriate technique or devices.
• Successfully complete the 180-day introductory period to achieve knowledge of policies related to job duties and patient care unit.

• Enrollment in a BSN program is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform specific patient care duties under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, meeting patient safety and comfort needs using the nursing process.
• Provide input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care.
• Respond to emergent situations according to established procedures.
• Recognize and participate in own continuing education.
• Remain actively enrolled in a nursing program, successfully complete each course, provide transcripts to the Nurse Manager after each course, and provide the Nurse Manager with a plan of work.
