About The Position

The Nurse Extern performs patient-care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role assists patients with personal care as needed, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, supports a safe environment and safe delivery of care, performs administrative functions, and maintains necessary skills and competencies.

This is an eight-week program running from June 14, 2027, through August 7, 2027. After orientation, the schedule is 36–40 hours per week across three 12-hour shifts. Candidates must be flexible to work days or nights in accordance with their preceptor’s schedule. Students may remain employed as a Nurse Extern until graduation; after graduation and board completion, they must apply for open positions and continue through the hiring process.

Requirements

• Be a nursing student entering the final year of nursing school, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
• BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
• Be flexible to work day or night shifts to match the preceptor’s schedule.
• No prior experience is required.
