About The Position

The Nurse Extern works under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, providing direct patient care as delegated and supervised by an RN. The role collaborates with the patient care team, documents care, monitors and communicates patient condition, and assists patients with activities of daily living. The Nurse Extern also supports care coordination, patient and family education, patient advocacy, and performance improvement. This is a PRN position located in Mayfield, Kentucky, at Jackson Purchase Medical Center.

Requirements

• Be a third-year or higher student in a School of Nursing.
• Hold Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP) certification.

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with the patient care team.
• Perform direct patient care under the direction, delegation, and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
• Document patient care provided.
• Monitor and record patient condition and communicate updates to the supervising RN as appropriate.
• Maintain positive professional relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and the healthcare team.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
• Collaborate across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfers, discharge, referrals, and spiritual or psychosocial support needs.
• Evaluate patient and family learning needs and provide education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
• Advocate for patients’ physical and emotional well-being.
• Support the performance improvement philosophy.
• Assist with orientation and training of personnel and students.
• Attend and participate in meetings as required or assigned.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
