The Nurse Extern (PCA) performs age-specific (adolescent, young adult) and developmentally appropriate patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) preceptor in a fast-paced environment. They perform only those duties/skills previously learned in nursing school with proof of competency and follow Loma Linda University Children's Hospital (LLUCH) policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines. The Nurse Extern assists the RN preceptor in performing the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) in a dynamic environment and in accordance with LLUCH's established Professional Practice Model to achieve proficient individualized physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellness and provide compassionate bereavement support as needed. They maintain open communication with the RN preceptor, take directions well, and follow through with assignments. The Nurse Extern keeps the RN preceptor informed regarding patient requests and status, reporting patient observations indicating complications or impending urgent situations. They function within the scope of practice of an unlicensed member of the multidisciplinary health care team. The role requires exhibiting professionalism in dress, attitude, and clinical practice; utilizing interpersonal skills to maximize customer service in a manner that supports the service excellence initiative, safe patient care, and professionalism; and contributing to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Other duties as needed will be performed.
