The Nurse Extern (PCA) performs age-specific (adolescent, young adult) and developmentally appropriate patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) preceptor in a fast-paced environment. They perform only those duties/skills previously learned in nursing school with proof of competency and follow Loma Linda University Children's Hospital (LLUCH) policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines. The role assists the RN preceptor in performing the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) in accordance with LLUCH's established Professional Practice Model to achieve proficient individualized physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellness and provide compassionate bereavement support as needed. The Nurse Extern maintains open communication with their RN preceptor, takes directions well, and follows through with assignments. They keep the RN preceptor informed regarding patient requests and status, reporting patient observations indicating complications or impending urgent situations. The role functions within the scope of practice of an unlicensed member of the multidisciplinary health care team. They exhibit professionalism in dress, attitude, and clinical practice, utilizing interpersonal skills to maximize customer service in a manner that supports service excellence, safe patient care, and professionalism. The Nurse Extern contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.
