About The Position

The Nurse Extern (PCA) performs age-specific (adolescent, young adult) and developmentally appropriate patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) preceptor in a fast-paced environment. The Nurse Extern performs only those duties/skills previously learned in nursing school with proof of competency and follows Loma Linda University Children's Hospital (LLUCH) policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines. Assists the RN preceptor in performing the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) and provides compassionate bereavement support as needed. Maintains open communication with the RN preceptor, takes directions well, and follows through with assignments. Keeps the RN preceptor informed regarding patient requests and status, reporting patient observations indicating complications or impending urgent situations. Functions within the scope of practice of an unlicensed member of the multidisciplinary health care team. Exhibits professionalism in dress, attitude, and clinical practice; utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize customer service in a manner that supports the service excellence initiative, safe patient care, and professionalism; contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Completion of Medical and Surgical courses at Loma Linda University School of Nursing.
  • Transcript with 3.0 GPA in nursing courses.
  • Two letters of recommendation (one from faculty) required.
  • Demonstrates basic competencies in clinical nursing duties/skills that were previously learned in nursing school.
  • Knowledge of scope of practice for unlicensed healthcare team members.
  • Able to read, write legibly and speak in English.
  • Use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Outlook, electronic medical record, event reporting system.
  • Perform basic non-licensed patient care activities.
  • Comprehend and follow-through with instructions.
  • Relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others.
  • Be assertive and consistent in following policies.
  • Work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure.

  • Discern temperature variances through touch.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required.

  • Spanish proficiency preferred.
  • Nursing assistant experience preferred.
