The Nurse Extern (PCA) performs age-specific (adolescent, young adult, middle adult, later adult) and developmentally appropriate patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) preceptor in a fast-paced environment. The Nurse Extern performs only those duties/skills previously learned in nursing school with proof of competency and follows Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines designated by the Board of Registered Nurses for work-study courses. Assists RN preceptor in performing the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) in a dynamic environment and in accordance with LLUMC's established Professional Practice Model (Duffy's Quality Caring Theory) to achieve proficient individualized physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellness and provide compassionate bereavement support as needed. Maintains open communication with RN preceptor, takes directions well and follows through with assignments. Keeps RN preceptor informed regarding patient requests and status, reporting patient observations indicating complications or impending urgent situations. Functions within the scope of practice of an unlicensed member of the multidisciplinary health care team. Exhibits professionalism in dress, attitude and clinical practice; utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize customer service in a manner that supports the service excellence initiative, safe patient care, and professionalism; contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.
