About The Position

This is a Tenure Track Faculty Position within the Nursing Department at Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC). The primary purpose is to provide support for nursing students in the Associate of Applied Science degree program and facilitate Clinical/Practicum instruction on the SWOCC Coos Bay and Curry campuses. The Nurse Educator will implement curriculum, assist with standardized testing, and serve as an achievement and skills coach, mentoring and evaluating students in study skills and psychomotor skills. The role involves working with students locally and at a distance.

Requirements

  • Meet qualifications set forth by the Oregon State Board of Nursing, Oregon Administrative Rules, for Division 21. 851-021-0045.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Have at least two (2) years of nursing experience.
  • Mastery of the subject area at a sufficient level to instruct and coach students.
  • Ability to evaluate student programs both empirically and holistically and to prescribe and develop curriculum materials.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, teaching methods to instruct students of a variety of ages, backgrounds, and learning abilities.
  • Ability to adapt to various audiences, find various explanations, and facilitate various learning styles.
  • Ability to work with and cooperate with college faculty and staff at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing using the English language.
  • Computer literacy sufficient to use software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to access student information for advising and record-keeping.
  • Willingness to travel and/or teach/coach at various hours as required.
  • Understand, develop, and provide a learning environment that supports student success, diversity, and incorporates a sensitivity to diversity in the workplace.
  • Willingness to develop knowledge and expertise in any area of the nursing curriculum.
  • Ability to review, understand, and apply concepts presented in the Nursing Program, continuing education conferences, and professional journals.
  • Must hold a current, unencumbered RN license in the State of Oregon.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Activity Lab and/or Clinical based courses in the Nursing program.
  • Implement lab curriculum, including organizing equipment, assisting with set-up/take-down, and supervising open lab practice sessions.
  • Assist with instruction, supervised practice, and assessment for clinical practicum labs.
  • Be available for readmission and advanced placement skills assessments.
  • Evaluate student performance in the achievement of Lab outcomes.
  • Maintain Lab evaluation tools and attendance records.
  • Collaboratively grade student performance with the primary Faculty.
  • Report and record grades and attendance for the nursing course.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing and other department faculty in developing or modifying course content, objectives, standards, and instructional methods.
  • Design supplemental teaching materials.
  • Evaluate students in accordance with course outline criteria and college policies.
  • Turn in grades according to college policy and procedure.
  • Progress student performance issues with primary Nursing Faculty and the appropriate clinical instructor.
  • Implement student remediation plans generated by faculty.
  • Create a course syllabus for each course taught.
  • Provide student Lab orientation sessions.
  • Advise assigned students on goals, program requirements, schedules, and progress, referring them to needed services.
  • Maintain records of advising sessions.
  • Demonstrate continued professional growth by staying current in subject area and teaching techniques.
  • Attend conferences and professional meetings.
  • Participate in recruitment and retention of students, and marketing of courses, programs, and the college.
  • Serve on faculty committees.
  • Attend student graduation ceremonies.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as required/assigned.
