About The Position

The Nurse Apprentice works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) in the clinical setting and participates appropriately in the patient care delivery process. The Nurse Apprentice is expected to work at least 12 hours per week during their last semester, as allowed under the State of Utah guidelines for a Nurse Apprentice. This role offers exposure to a wide variety of pediatric care settings, including acute and critical care, supporting all inpatient units at Primary Children’s Hospital. Additional optional opportunities for skill development include chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, Emergency Department, and more. The Children’s Health Resource Pool is highly skilled and an important part of every team.

Requirements

  • Licensed and registered as a Nurse Apprentice with the state of Utah
  • Enrolled in an accredited nursing school program
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for healthcare providers

Responsibilities

  • Routinely observes, discusses, and demonstrates understanding of the steps in the nursing process and how the patient plan of care is developed, implemented, and revised to meet the needs of the patient (under direct supervision of an RN).
  • Collects patient data (e.g., vital signs) and reports significant changes in patient condition to the supervising RN.
  • Completes accurate documentation, which is verified by the supervising RN.
  • Reports patient responses to treatments and collaborates with the RN regarding changes requiring modification of nursing interventions to meet patient needs.
  • May also assist an RN with the following (1:1 supervision required): Arterial line (ART) line blood draws, Blood transfusion, IV therapy, Oral medication administration, Initiating tube feedings.
