About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Remote Systems Engineer for its Hot Cell Instrumentation and Data team. The position is based at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC), which supports nuclear research and development, including remote work with highly irradiated fuels and materials. The team works a 4x10 schedule, with Fridays off. The engineer develops, operates, and maintains remotely operated mechanical systems and hot cell equipment supporting advanced nuclear research. The role collaborates with researchers, technicians, operators, and scientists throughout the equipment lifecycle, from conceptual design and mockups through fabrication oversight, installation, and long-term configuration management. The position may include procurement, quality-level determination, scheduling, and cost estimating for small projects. This is a testing-designated position requiring a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing. The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen and able and willing to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance. The posting lists Level 3 and Level 4 compensation ranges and indicates placement will depend on the candidate’s experience and skills.

Requirements

  • For Level 3: A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, a directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution, or another related field, and 5 years of experience; or a master's degree and 2 years of experience; or a PhD and 2 years of experience.
  • For Level 4: A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, a directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution, or another related field, and 9 years of experience; or a master's degree and 6 years of experience; or a PhD and 4 years of experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able and willing to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance.
  • Experience in development testing, electromechanical design, fabrication support, mockup qualification testing, installation support, and acceptance testing.
  • Ability to use scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
  • Ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and implement solutions.
  • Ability to understand spoken information and communicate information clearly in speech.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated ability to work in regulated, procedure-driven environments where safety, compliance, and rigorous documentation are paramount.
  • Experience in the DOE complex, nuclear facilities, or similarly regulated industries.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills, including the ability to translate effectively between operations staff and research scientists and adapt communication style and level of detail.
  • Advanced proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), including applying it to drawing creation, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design for manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and produce remotely operated process equipment and systems for hot-cell and glove-box applications.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of remotely operated process equipment and systems and their technical baselines.
  • Develop practical engineering solutions for research-related challenges that require specialized, often one-of-a-kind equipment.
  • Design and develop new processes and handling equipment.
  • Design systems, equipment, and fixturing for remote applications.
  • Modify existing process equipment and systems to support new missions.
  • Adapt commercially available equipment for remote applications.
  • Install and qualify new post-irradiation examination (PIE) and test equipment and instrumentation using mockups.
  • Serve as a technical interface among nuclear facilities, principal investigators, projects, and programs.
  • Support research through process development, operation, and data analysis for nuclear fuel and material measurements in nuclear facilities.
  • Work with research personnel to establish experiment-specific requirements for remote processes and examinations.
  • Complete design reviews and verification.
  • Manage the configuration of assigned systems and the Engineering Change (EC) process.
  • May handle procurement, quality-level determination, scheduling, and cost estimating for small projects.
