About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Remote Systems Engineer for its Hot Cell Instrumentation and Data team. The position is based at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC), which supports nuclear research and development using facilities for remote work on highly irradiated fuels and materials. The team works a 4x10 schedule, with Fridays off. The engineer develops, operates, and maintains remotely operated mechanical systems and hot cell equipment in support of advanced nuclear research. The role collaborates with researchers, technicians, operators, and scientists throughout the equipment lifecycle, from conceptual design and mockups through fabrication oversight, installation, and long-term configuration management. The position may be filled at Level 3 or Level 4, depending on the depth and breadth of the candidate’s experience and skills. This is a testing-designated position requiring a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing during employment. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and able and willing to obtain and maintain a DOE “L” clearance.

Requirements

  • For Level 3: Bachelor of Science in mechanical, electrical, or nuclear engineering, a directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution, or another related field, plus 5 years of experience; alternatively, a master's degree plus 2 years of experience or a Ph.D. plus 2 years of experience.
  • For Level 4: Bachelor of Science in mechanical, electrical, or nuclear engineering, a directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution, or another related field, plus 9 years of experience; alternatively, a master's degree plus 6 years of experience or a Ph.D. plus 4 years of experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able and willing to obtain and maintain a DOE “L” clearance.
  • Experience in development testing, electromechanical design, fabrication support, mockup qualification testing, installation support, and acceptance testing.
  • Ability to use scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
  • Ability to identify complex problems, review related information, develop and evaluate options, and implement solutions.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally so others understand.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in the DOE complex, nuclear facilities, or similarly regulated industries.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in regulated, procedure-driven environments where safety, compliance, and documentation rigor are paramount.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills, including the ability to translate effectively between operations staff and research scientists and adjust communication style and depth as needed.
  • Advanced proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), with experience applying it to drawing creation, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design for manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and produce remotely operated process equipment and systems for hot-cell and glove-box environments, and support their operation, maintenance, and technical baseline.
  • Provide practical engineering solutions to research program challenges that require specialized, often one-of-a-kind, equipment.
  • Design and develop new processes, handling equipment, systems, equipment, and fixturing for remote applications.
  • Modify existing process equipment and systems for new missions and adapt commercially available equipment for remote applications.
  • Install and qualify new Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) and test equipment and instrumentation through mockup activities.
  • Serve as a technical interface among nuclear facilities, principal investigators, projects, and programs.
  • Support research through process development, operation, and data analysis of nuclear fuel and material measurements in nuclear facilities.
  • Work with research personnel to establish experiment-specific requirements for remote processes and examinations.
  • Complete design reviews and verification.
  • Manage configuration of assigned systems and the Engineering Change (EC) process.
  • May handle procurement, quality-level determination, scheduling, and cost estimating for small projects.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, and Flexible Spending Accounts.
  • 401(k) with a 4.2% employer contribution and up to 4.8% match for regular positions.
  • Paid time off (personal leave).
  • Employee Education Program, including tuition assistance for eligible positions.
  • Comprehensive relocation package.
