About The Position

The Nocturnist Hospitalist provides overnight hospitalist care at Ascension St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, Wisconsin. The physician works with a dedicated night APP partner and receives handoffs from a daytime team of four physicians and two APPs. The average workload is approximately eight admissions per night, with a 7-on/7-off schedule from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM and 144 shifts annually. The role involves evaluating and treating acute admissions, responding to code blue and rapid response calls, and providing care in a semi-closed ICU setting. Procedures may be performed at the physician’s discretion, with support from experienced nursing staff and subspecialists. The physician also works with medical staff to support quality, cost-effectiveness, and patient outcomes, and maintains accurate patient records to support continuity of care. Ascension St. Elizabeth Hospital is a Level III Trauma Center and Certified Stroke and Chest Pain Center, with a recently enhanced 90-bed patient tower and a newly renovated clinical environment. Subspecialty support includes Cardiology, Pulmonology/Critical Care, GI, and Surgery. The position includes relocation assistance of up to $10,000 if applicable, a 2.5% annual quality metric bonus, a seniority bonus, a $4,000 CME allowance, and malpractice coverage with tail.

Requirements

MD or DO degree.
Physician MD/DO credential from either the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice or the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board, obtained before the hire or job transfer date.

Nice To Haves

Advanced Life Support certification; American Heart Association or American Red Cross certification accepted.

Responsibilities

Evaluate and treat acute admissions overnight.
