About The Position

At Stony Brook Medicine, a New Patient Coordinator in the Cancer Center is the first contact between Stony Brook Medicine, the general public, and the private practice physicians population and must exemplify the highest level of guest relations. This is a temporary position that may end at any time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree. Verification of degree (e.g., diploma or official transcript) is required for this role. Upload of documentation must be included with your application for consideration.
  • At least 3 years of customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Data collection experience.
  • High proficiency handling data extracts and preparation of metrics and spreadsheets.
  • Must be computer literate and knowledgeable in MS Office.
  • Experience and skill on focusing on details and accuracy, multi-tasking and follow-through.
  • Candidate must demonstrate experience and expertise in speaking with customers and can work well with persons who are under stress (such as sick patients and their distress family members).
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 5 panel drug screen
  • Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Nice To Haves

  • 5 or more years of medical setting direct patient contact experience.
  • Prior experience working with Cerner.
  • Experience dealing with physician and patient inquiries.
  • Manager or Supervisor experience.
  • Telephone console experience.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience working within Stony Brook Hospital.
  • Experience working within Citrix applications.
  • Experience verifying insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule appointments in Cerner/EWS scheduling system to fulfill the requirements of the department to include scheduling appointments for several providers, cancelling and viewing appointments, verification of patient registration, physician bookings, and limited triage.
  • Respond to patient care inquiries, health information and referrals which may be considered sensitive and/or confidential.
  • Provide quick responses to visitor/phone inquiries.
  • Collect data and report on new patients and follow up on patient's care.
  • Prepare reports for distribution to leadership related to volume and other performance metrics.
  • Handle patient service recovery tasks and patient/customer service issues.
  • Assist with training staff to operate Echo software platform and Cerner/EWS systems.
  • Act as a backup and cross cover for Information Coordinator and/or Supervisor.
  • Assist with training staff to operate various software platforms and Cerner/EWS systems.
