About The Position

VAST Data is hiring a Network Engineer in its Field Engineering organization to define how VAST connects to customer environments. The role develops reference architectures, validated switch configurations, and RDMA fabric designs for customer deployments. It is focused on design and research rather than a support queue, with responsibility for building and operating a lab to qualify switches, NICs, and network operating systems before customer deployment. The engineer investigates network behavior across speeds and workloads, reproduces complex customer issues, identifies root causes, and turns findings into standards and guidance for the field organization. The role works across R&D, QA, Support, Product, and customer engineering teams, and directly with networking vendors. Its technical focus includes AI infrastructure, GPU fabrics, lossless Ethernet, and storage protocols operating at line rate.

Requirements

  • Strong data center networking fundamentals at CCNP level or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Solid command of BGP and L3 routing, including eBGP/iBGP, ECMP, route policy, multipath, and BGP-based fabrics.
  • Hands-on experience designing and troubleshooting both L2 and L3 data center networks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot across network layers, including routing, ARP/ND, MTU, congestion, packet loss, and latency.
  • Working knowledge of Linux networking, including interfaces, VLANs, routing tables, namespaces, and MTU.
  • Comfort using tcpdump, Wireshark, iperf, and standard diagnostic tools.
  • Practical approach to building a lab and reproducing problems rather than relying on theory alone.
  • Clear technical writing skills to make designs and findings understandable to others.

Responsibilities

  • Define reference network architectures for VAST deployments, including L2 and L3 fabrics, BGP and EVPN/VXLAN designs, and RoCEv2 and QoS policies.
  • Document network standards and designs so the field organization can execute deployments consistently.
  • Build and operate validation environments for switch qualification, interoperability testing, performance characterization, and reproducing customer issues.
  • Evaluate switches, network operating systems, and NICs from vendors including NVIDIA, Arista, Cisco, and Juniper.
  • Work with vendor engineering teams to close gaps and certify supported configurations.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues across the path between GPUs, the network fabric, and storage, including congestion, packet loss, MTU, latency, PFC, and ECN behavior under load.
  • Determine root causes of network problems and address them at their source.
  • Feed findings back into VAST through documented best practices, automation, and direct input to R&D on potential platform changes.
