About The Position

VAST Data is hiring a Network Engineer in its Field Engineering organization to define the network architectures and designs used for VAST deployments. The role focuses on designing reference architectures, validating switch configurations, and developing RDMA fabric designs for AI infrastructure, including GPU fabrics, lossless Ethernet, and storage protocols operating at line rate. This is a design and research role involving building and operating a lab to qualify switches, NICs, and network operating systems before customer deployment. The engineer will investigate network behavior and performance at different speeds, reproduce complex customer issues, identify root causes, and document standards and findings for the field organization. The role works across R&D, QA, Support, Product, and customer engineering teams, as well as networking vendors including NVIDIA, Arista, Cisco, and Juniper. Findings are fed back into VAST as documented best practices, automation, and direct product input.

Requirements

  • Strong data center networking fundamentals at CCNP level or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Solid command of BGP and L3 routing, including eBGP/iBGP, ECMP, route policy, multipath, and BGP-based fabrics.
  • Hands-on experience designing and troubleshooting both L2 and L3 data center networks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot across routing, ARP/ND, MTU, congestion, packet loss, and latency.
  • Working knowledge of Linux networking, including interfaces, VLANs, routing tables, namespaces, and MTU.
  • Comfort using tcpdump, Wireshark, iperf, and standard diagnostic tools.
  • Ability and inclination to build a lab and reproduce problems rather than rely on theorizing.
  • Clear technical writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Define reference network architectures for VAST deployments, including L2 and L3 fabrics, BGP and EVPN/VXLAN designs, RoCEv2, and QoS policy.
  • Build and operate lab environments for switch qualification, interoperability testing, performance characterization, and reproducing customer issues.
  • Evaluate switches, network operating systems, and NICs from NVIDIA, Arista, Cisco, Juniper, and other vendors.
  • Work with vendor engineering teams to close gaps and certify network components and configurations.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues across GPUs, the network fabric, and storage, including congestion, packet loss, MTU, latency, and PFC and ECN behavior under load.
  • Determine root causes of network issues and address them at their source.
  • Document designs, standards, findings, and best practices so the field organization can execute consistently.
  • Provide findings to VAST through documented best practices, automation, and direct input to R&D on platform improvements.
  • Collaborate with R&D, QA, Support, Product, customer engineering teams, and networking vendors.
