About The Position

GCI's Network Administrator I will provide support and expertise in local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), internet system, and storage area network (SAN) in support of complex client-server environments. This position will provide operational monitoring, support, analysis, and systems administration. The role involves installing, configuring, and supporting the organization’s networks by maintaining systems, applications, security, and network configurations. The Network Administrator I is responsible for the configuration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning of data communications hardware and software. This is an entry-level position for a network or server system administrator, working under close supervision with a basic skill set and proficiency within the discipline. The role requires conducting work assignments as directed under close supervision, with a comprehensive understanding of installing, configuring, and supporting networks (LAN/WAN). Responsibilities include monitoring, maintaining systems, applications, security, and network configurations, performing network performance analysis and testing, ensuring secure and reliable operation following telecommunications technologies, and escalating to higher-level administrators or management as needed. The role also involves aiding more senior-level teams and providing event tracking, notification, simple remediation, and escalation support to a higher-level network administrator. The Network Administrator I will notify technical support groups and participate in maintaining the status of network systems, provide daily summary reports of events and system documentation updates, and mentor junior technicians. The Service Management Center (SMC) Addendum requires availability for on-call or after-hours support for emergency call-outs, participating in troubleshooting bridges by providing guidance, and supporting incident break fix, move add change deletions (MACD) requests, and logical maintenance activities. This includes following best practices for account management, access authorization, and mitigation of security vulnerabilities, as well as reviewing hardware critical sparing, vendor procurement, and third-party maintenance support. The Technology Solutions – VoIP Administrator role is part of Technology Solutions, focusing on VoIP engineering.

Requirements

  • Candidates must reside within 50 miles of Anchorage, Alaska
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate’s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, or relevant field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience within a technical LAN/WAN Networking Operations; computer systems, or related background.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Visio, Excel, and Word.
  • Knowledge of server software.
  • Understanding of the functions of internet such as DNS, DHCP, routing, servers, clients, browsers, and email.
  • Knowledge in LAN/WAN technologies, internet, and server platforms.
  • Must have comprehensive understanding of install, configure, and support of networks; LAN/WAN.
  • Monitor, maintain systems, applications, security, and network configurations; network performance conduct analysis and testing and ensure secure and reliable operation following telecommunications technologies; ability to escalate to higher level administrators, management as needed and be able to aid more senior level teams.
  • Ability to work shifts as assigned, work in standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively.
  • Ability to make valid judgments and decisions.
  • Must work well in a team environment and be able to work with a diverse group of people and customers.
  • Virtual workers must comply with remote work policies and agreements.
  • Must provide emergency after hours contact numbers, to include home and cell phone numbers if available.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, configures, and supports the company’s local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and internet systems, or a segment of a network system.
  • Monitors network to ensure network availability to all system users and may perform necessary maintenance to support network availability.
  • Responsible for direct customer communication and Tier I and Tier II escalation support.
  • May monitor and test site performance to ensure sites operate correctly and without interruption.
  • Supports in-network modeling, analysis, planning, and coordination between network and data communications hardware and software.
  • Administer / perform network security measures.
  • Provides event tracking, notification, simple remediation, and escalation support to a higher-level network administrator.
  • Notifies technical support groups and participates in maintaining status of network systems.
  • Provide daily summary report of events and system documentation updates.
  • Mentoring junior technicians.
  • Required to be available for on call or after-hours support for emergency call outs performed by SMC (Service Management Center).
  • Participate in troubleshooting bridges by providing guidance to coworkers, customers, or vendors and cross pillar collaboration with other engineering, administrative and technical groups.
  • Responsible for supporting and helping resolve an incident break fix, move add change deletions (MACD) requests and logical maintenance activities through process, procedures, training, documentation, or automation.
  • Follow best practices and procedures related to account management, access authorization & validation, and mitigation & remediation of any identified security vulnerabilities.
  • Responsible for review of hardware critical sparing, vendor procurement activities and third-party software and hardware maintenance support.
