About The Position

The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing is seeking part-time, enthusiastic and dedicated Neonatologist Nurse Practitioners to join the Neonatology team. UMH-Sparrow is committed to improving access to medical care across the Mid-Michigan region. This role involves providing clinical care in a 35-bed Level III NICU and a 12-bed Special Care Nursery. The NICU manages 700-800 admissions annually, with high-frequency ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, and therapeutic hypothermia. The team includes neonatologists, APPs, fellows, and residents. The position offers participation in academic case conferences and QI initiatives with Michigan Medicine, and involves 12-hour shifts.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years NNP/PA experience.
  • Graduate of an accredited PA or NNP program.
  • Current NP licensure in State of MI.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, clinical practice standards, normal maternal / fetal growth and development, and requirements of Advanced practice provider practice.
  • Able to independently seek out resources and solve complex problems.
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
  • Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Able to use fine motor skills.
  • Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations.
  • Able to use computer and learn new software programs.
  • Able to provide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals.
  • Able to navigate the Hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations.
  • Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds.
  • Able to remain focused and organized.
  • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Providing assessment, evaluation and treatment of neonates in the RNICU in collaboration with the Neonatologists.
  • Assessing, planning, and evaluating medical care in collaboration with the Neonatologists.
  • Reporting accurately and concisely in-patient care rounds and problem oriented documentation.
  • Collaborating with health care team in planning and coordinating care for the neonate and his/her family through care conferences.
  • Ordering diagnostic studies and therapeutic measures in collaboration with the responsible physician.
  • Ordering medications utilizing approved NICU goals, guidelines and protocols (includes blood and blood products).
  • Attending high-risk deliveries, resuscitating and stabilizing patients.
  • Determining need for and performing core specialized diagnostic, therapeutic and other procedures.
  • Performing procedures such as exchange transfusion, initiation of oscillator ventilator support, pericardiocentesis, thoracotomy for chest tube insertion after consultation with a Neonatologist (unless life threatening situation).
  • Providing direction to NNTS on transport or participating on transports when appropriate.
  • Providing consultation to Newborn Nursery and Perinatal areas.
  • Assisting in clinical supervision and teaching of residents, advanced practice nursing students, and PA students.
  • Participating in performance evaluations.
  • Formulating long and short-term goals based on self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses.
  • Participating as appropriate in the formulation, revision and implementation of policies and procedures in the RNICU.
  • Participating in performance improvement.
  • Assisting in maintaining a climate conducive to open communication.
  • Acting as a role model and resource for peers, residents and nursing staff.
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local laws and regulations, the Corporate Compliance Plan, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
