About The Position

Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) is dedicated to advancing gender equality and justice through impact litigation, policy reform, and community outreach. This role will direct and expand ERA's national economic justice campaigns, including the Equal Pay Today campaign. The Director will collaborate with lead program staff on various strategies, contribute to organizational planning, and support staff and fund development. This is a senior legal team position reporting to the VP of Policy and Advocacy, with close collaboration with the Executive Director on the Equal Pay Today campaign.

Requirements

  • A law degree with 10+ years of relevant experience spanning employment law, economic justice, civil rights, or related legal advocacy fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in regulatory advocacy and policy development in areas related to pay equity, wage and hour enforcement and workplace rights and protections.
  • Proven ability to design and lead multi-pronged advocacy strategies, integrating legal, policy, communications, and organizing approaches.
  • Experience working with or within coalitions, networks and campaigns, including managing diverse stakeholders and aligning partners around shared goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to gender justice, racial equity, and economic justice, with experience centering impacted communities in advocacy strategies.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state labor and employment laws, including but not limited to pay equity laws, pay transparency policies, and wage theft enforcement frameworks.
  • Experience drafting or overseeing regulatory comments, amicus briefs, or enforcement strategies.
  • Experience managing or mentoring staff and/or leading cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to lead strategic planning processes and execute multi-year campaign plans.
  • Willingness to travel periodically for national convenings, state campaigns, and coalition meetings.
  • Comfort with fund development, conceptualizing programmatic work for funders, and meeting with donors.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment with a geographically dispersed team.
  • Valid authorization to work in the United States.
  • Must not require sponsorship for work visas.
  • Will not provide relocation assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in campaign leadership, such as, national or state advocacy campaigns, movement-building initiatives.
  • Familiarity with workplace equity laws, pay equity laws, pay transparency policies, and enforcement frameworks.
  • Prior experience supporting or advising 501(c)(4) advocacy organizations, including lobbying compliance and strategy.
  • Track record of building and expanding legal or advocacy networks.
  • Ability to build trust with coalition partners, member organizations, and stakeholders across geographies.
  • Prior experience managing program budgets and working with development staff to develop funding proposals and manage and report on funding deliverables.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including representing ERA’s campaigns and initiatives to external audiences, and partners.
  • Comfortable navigating evolving political, legal, and organizational landscapes.
  • Comfortable in a tech-oriented, paper-less environment and adept at navigating and/ or learning various systems and Apps used at ERA.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and expand national Equal Pay Today campaign and other national and state economic justice campaign efforts.
  • Work closely with Litigation Director, Policy Director, and Communications Director on campaign strategies.
  • Contribute to organizational strategic planning related to campaigns.
  • Support staff and fund development.
  • Be responsible for regulatory, policy, enforcement, and other legal activities of the Equal Pay Today campaign.
  • Grow the campaign’s Litigation Network and develop opportunities for member participation on amici and legal enforcement efforts.
  • Oversee regulatory comments and agency defense efforts.
  • Oversee growing the campaign’s membership in more states and among worker-centered organizations.
  • Strengthen the campaign's federal/national influence.
  • Lead legal strategy and oversight of EPT’s Annual Strategic Plan, EPT’s Equal Pay Day campaign, EPT’s Steering and Roundtable meetings, and EPT’s Enforcement/Research, Policy, and Community Outreach Committees.
  • Oversee the NY Pay Equity Coalition, including its policy and regulatory efforts and support of workers.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and development of ERA’s Women’s Policy Agenda Initiative in additional states.
  • Strengthen relationships and lead joint actions with current organizational and individual members of coalitions and networks.
  • Contribute to the lobbying, organizing, and legal activities of ERA’s 501(c)(4) entity, Equal Rights Advocates Action Fund (ERA-AF).
