About The Position

MU337 facilitates the acquisition of the Musical Skills sequence-level objectives in complex chromatic and modal music, and simple atonal contexts. Melodies will include uncommon and challenging skips in modal, chromatic, and atonal contexts, irregular and changing meters, including note values as short as the divided subdivision of the beat, and 20th/21st century compositional devices (e.g. graphic notation). Rhythmic exercises (both performance and dictation) will include note values as short as the divided subdivision of the beat in simple, compound, irregular, and changing meters, with emphasis on odd meters and tempo modulations.

Requirements

  • Master’s in Music.
  • Evidence of excellent university-level teaching in Musical Skills courses.
  • A high level of achievement and personal skill in Solfege technique.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral degree in music.
  • Experience teaching senior collegiate level musical skills courses (200 level or above).
  • Experience using movable Do system (Do-based minor).
  • Experience using the Takadimi system of rhythmic solmization.

Responsibilities

  • Teach melodies including uncommon and challenging skips in modal, chromatic, and atonal contexts.
  • Instruct on irregular and changing meters, including note values as short as the divided subdivision of the beat.
  • Cover 20th/21st century compositional devices (e.g. graphic notation).
  • Lead rhythmic exercises (both performance and dictation) including note values as short as the divided subdivision of the beat in simple, compound, irregular, and changing meters.
  • Emphasize odd meters and tempo modulations in rhythmic exercises.
