About The Position

The Monitor Technician's functions include observation, identification, documentation and communication of various cardiac rhythms. The Monitor Technician reports these changes to the patient's assigned nurse and responds to physician inquiries. This role involves continuously observing, evaluating, and recalling cardiac rhythms of telemetry patients, and effectively performing video monitoring of seizure patients. The technician is responsible for assessing cardiac rhythms, accurately interpreting them, measuring EKG intervals, and promptly recognizing dysrhythmias or changes in the EKG complex. They monitor Q waves, ST segments, and QT intervals, noting any changes, and respond to all monitoring outcomes. Additionally, they investigate the cause of any interruption in the reception of the heart rhythm. The role also includes ensuring the proper function of monitoring equipment, maintaining adequate supplies, and using troubleshooting techniques to optimize equipment utilization. The technician must be knowledgeable about monitoring systems, able to individualize settings to each patient's needs, and correctly enter monitoring changes in the computer. They are expected to use problem-solving skills and past experiences to optimize the use of monitoring equipment or address equipment failure, seeking assistance when necessary. The technician is responsible for maintaining supplies, controlling equipment, documenting and tracking equipment use, and reporting equipment needs. They must maintain current knowledge of cardiac monitoring and participate in continuing education, including successfully completing certification EKG tests and ongoing recertifications. The role also involves integration of individual efforts within the unit and performing supportive activities to optimize efficient patient care, such as answering telephone lines, entering computer changes for orders, and demonstrating flexibility and adaptation to changing unit needs. Efficient and accurate response in a unit crisis, assisting in sitting with patients, and willingness to assist peers are also expected. Maintaining open communication, assisting in achieving department goals, giving and receiving peer evaluation constructively, and knowledge of quality assurance indicators are also part of the role.
